Some Jamaicans in the US report disruptions amid severe winter storm

Some members of the Jamaican diaspora in the United States say their lives were disrupted due to the winter storm which has been impacting several states since the weekend.

At least 34 storm related deaths have been recorded in 14 states, to include Kentucky, Michigan, South Carolina, New Jersey, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Texas, Louisiana and New York.

The storm has also caused power outages and treacherous road conditions for emergency responders.

Speaking with IRIE FM News today a Jamaican high school teacher residing in the Carolina said the freezing rains impacted roadways and prevented her from going to work.

Ruach Byfield said while his community in Philadelphia did not suffer significant damage, snow of up to 12 inches fell in his area.

He too noted that he had to remain indoors until the storm passed.

Over in New York, Anthony Hayden said this is one of the worst winter storms he has experienced, since living in the US.

He described the storm as dangerous, but said, due to his profession, he was out clearing the roads.
