Some Jamaican teachers in the US fearful, following several mass shootings at schools in that country
Some Jamaican Teachers in the United States are expressing fear for their lives, following a number of mass shooting incidents in that country.
In the latest mass shooting in Georgia last Wednesday, four people were killed – two teachers and two students – at a high school.
nine other people were wounded.
This happened when a 14-year-old student used an A-R rifle to open fire on the victims.
The child and his father have been charged.
According to ABC News, the deadly incident was the 218th time a gun was fired or brandished at a school in the United States since the start of the year.
Three teachers who spoke to IRIE FM News on a condition of anonymity expressed concern about the growing issue.
A middle school teacher in the US who migrated from Jamaica in search of greener pastures said the latest incident last week, has left her fearful for her life.
She said her only hope is divine protection.
The teacher who has been teaching in the US for the past three years, believes the lack of proper parenting in the US is very concerning.
She said despite loving her profession, she sometimes wonders how long she will be able to continue.
She said in response, police officers have been deployed to institutions during school hours.
She said schools also engage in intruder drills and prepare lockdown systems in the event of a shooting.
Her concerns were echoed by another educator who noted that she is not as fortunate as her colleague to have measures at her institution.
She said this has heightened her safety concerns.
Another Jamaican teacher in the US believes someone can become a victim whether they are in Jamaica or in the US.
She says she is not scared, as she too prays daily for coverage.
However, she describes the situation as sad, noting that it only shows that the US needs firm parents to instil good morals and values, especially in these times.
In recent years, hundreds of Jamaican teachers have migrated to the United States and other countries in search of better pay among other benefits.
