Some educators at UWI Mona campus to take industrial action today
Some teachers at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus will reportedly take industrial action today.
This as the union representing them says the university’s management has not responded to the teachers’ concerns about changes to health and pension benefits, which would affect new staff members coming on as of August 1.
Among the planned changes is management’s reduction of its pension contribution from 10 to 5 per cent.
The West Indies Group of University Teachers says there was no discussion or agreement with the union representing the teachers about the changes.
It also alleged that when concern was raised about the change, UWI management reportedly refused to reverse its unilateral decision.
WIGUT President Dr. Paul Brown said, owing to the lack of a response from the university’s management, members will proceed with industrial action by withdrawing their service.
