SOE declared in 4 police divisions; Govt pledges to address underlying violence factors

The government has pledged to continue efforts to address the underlying factors that fuel violence in areas deemed hotspots for gang-related warfare.

This amid criticism over the declaration of States of Emergency (SOE) in four police divisions today.

They are St. Andrew South, St. Andrew Central, Kingston Western and St. Catherine South.

A statement from the office of the prime minister says, the declaration follows a significant increase, in violent criminal activities, within these areas.

It notes that these locations have been identified as hotspots for gang-related warfare which poses public safety risks to residents, commuters and bystanders given their use as public thoroughfares.

OPM says intelligence assessment has revealed that violence and criminal activity in these communities have reached a level beyond what standard policing strategies can manage to effectively restore stability and public order.

OPM adds that by declaring the SOEs the enhanced security tactics will enable the security forces to disrupt criminal networks apprehend offenders and foster conditions for lasting peace.

It says these actions will be carried out with full respect for constitutional safeguards and the protection of citizens’ rights.
