Six people have been arrested in relation to a multi-million dollar smishing scam, targeting a National Commercial Bank NCB customer.

The operations began last night.

The Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) says the operations continue in six locations across St Elizabeth, Clarendon, St Catherine and Kingston.

MOCA’s Director of Communications Major Basil Jarrett, said he expects that charges will be laid against those arrested, shortly.

He said the latest smishing-related arrests are not connected to last week’s arrest of a Jamaica Defence Force soldier, who is said to have been involved in a phishing scam that defrauded NCB of over $47 million.

Phishing and smishing are cyber-attacks carried out by criminals who use fake mobile text messages and emails to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information, or sending them money.
