Silk Boss faces backlash over song following Manchester shootout
Dancehall artist Silk Boss is facing backlash after releasing a song that seems to glorify violence, including references to the slain gunman involved in the Manchester shootout with police.
Spanish Town-based selector Neako Fire is among those voicing disappointment in the entertainer’s move.
The controversy comes in the wake of the September 9 standoff in Mandeville, Manchester. Dave Alfrancis Wilson, also known as “Brown Man,” was killed by police after a four-hour shootout. Reports indicate the confrontation began when Wilson allegedly shot and killed a man during a dispute over a $200 difference in the cost of eggs.
Wilson then barricaded himself inside his apartment complex, sparking a tense standoff that ended in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.
As debate continues, some argue that Silk Boss’s lyrics send the wrong message, while others point out that glorifying violence is nothing new in the music industry, where many artists have referenced notorious gang leaders in their songs.
