Shericka Jackson out of women’s 100m at Paris Olympics

Jamaica’s medal prospects at the ongoing Paris Olympics has taken a substantial blow with news that back to back world 200 metre champion Shericka Jackson will not contest the women’s 100 metre event and has been replaced by Shashalee Forbes.

Jackson’s fitness has been a doubt since July 9 when she competed at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Hungary, where she pulled up coming down the home stretch and limped off the track before she was later seen with a taped knee.

Following the injury scare, her physiotherapist Troy Evans confirmed via his Instagram page that the injury was not serious, adding she only had a cramp in her hamstring.

However questions about her readiness to challenge for the sprint titles at the Olympics persisted with Jackson missing from competition since picking up the injury.

In an interview with IRIE FM reporter Robert Williams on Monday, MVP Track Club coach Stephen Francis gave limited information regarding Jackson’s “I think that is something you’re going to have to address to her medical personnel but as far as I know she appears to be okay to me.”

Speaking with Jamaican media on Tuesday Francis again deferred questions on Jackson’s fitness to Team Jamaica’s Technical Leader Maurice Wilson.

“I have no part to play in Jamaica injuries or declarations. That is for the team officials,” Francis said after training at the Complexe sportif de l’lle-des-Vannes training centre in Saint-Denis, France.

With Jackson pulling out of the women’s 100m dash it remains uncertain if she will still contest the 200m event, where she is favoured to win gold.

Forbes, who finished fourth at the Jamaican Olympic trials will now take her place alongside Tia Clayton and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
