Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Rasheed Broadbell were last night crowned National Sportswoman and Sportsman of the year at a glittering national awards ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.

Fraser-Pryce who is being named Jamaica’s top sportswoman for a 5th time, won the award after a sensational season where she won her 5th world 100 meter title in a championship record 10.67 seconds to go along with her capturing the Diamond League title….also for a 5th time. 

Additionally, the 36-year-old ran a blistering seven sub-10.70 second times in 2022 which included a world-leading time of 10.62 seconds which saw her shortlisted as one of three finalists for the world athletics female athlete of the year award.

Broadbell meanwhile captured his first-ever sportsman of the year award following a breakout season during which he won gold in the men’s 110m hurdles event at the Commonwealth Games Birmingham in a record equaling 13.08 seconds.\

The 22 year old also became just the third Jamaican to dip below 13 seconds after running a new personal best 12.99 seconds to claim victory over world champion Grant Holloway on the Diamond League circuit where he came away with silver in the final.

Also recognized last was sub 10 king Asafa Powell who received the lifetime achievement award

The national awards which celebrated the top sporting performances of 2022, was returning to its face-to-face format after the covid-19 pandemic resulted in 2020 edition being canceled and last year’s ceremony being held virtually.
