“Shallow and misguided!”

That remark from State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Abka Fitz-Henley as he chastised Opposition Spokesperson on Finance Julian Robinson over his criticism of the Government’s moratorium on non-essential official overseas travel.

Mr. Robinson questioned whether the ban, which took effect yesterday, is a public relations stunt.

However, Fitz-Henley maintains that the measure is part of a wider push to strengthen expenditure controls, speed up decision-making and improve service delivery.

The travel restriction is slated to remain in effect until March 31, next year.

It covers ministries, departments, agencies and public bodies, including travel funded by external sponsors.

Exceptions will be allowed for travel essential to post-Melissa reconstruction and recovery, national security, standing bilateral and multilateral engagements and approved board commitments, tourism promotion and genuine emergencies of compelling national importance.
