The four main operating theatres at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) will reopen sometime next week following a comprehensive mould remediation treatment exercise.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Opposition Spokesperson on Health, Dr. Alfred Dawes raised concern about surgical cases at the KPH, citing mould and air conditioning issues as factors impacting the facility’s operating theatres.

Dr. Dawes had described the mould infestation as a crisis.

In a statement last evening, the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) said the theatres will reopen following a comprehensive sanitization exercise and renovation of the spaces.

SERHA said KPH’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Barrington Graham confirmed that critical repairs have been undertaken to restore full functionality to the theatres in a timely manner.

He further explained that the operations team at KPH and the regional technical department will continue to carry out regular air quality tests to ensure that all infection control standards are maintained within the newly renovated operating theatres.

SERHA said KPH remains dedicated to providing safe and effective healthcare, and these steps will ensure that the operating theatres are fully functional and safe for patient use again.
