The Senate has accepted an invitation from the Integrity Commission for its members to participate in a statutory declaration sensitization session.

The development comes amid recent statements that the Integrity Commission said indicated that some political representatives were misguided about their obligations under the Integrity Commission Act.

For instance, Justice Minister Delroy Chuck had questioned whether the commission has the power to request information on the spouses of government officials.

He said he had advised persons not to allow their spouses to divulge the information.

The commission does however have the power to request pertinent information from government officials, including spousal income details.

In a release on Wednesday, the commission noted that it had invited members of both houses of parliament to participate in a sensitization session.

This afternoon it confirmed that Senate President Tom Tavares-Finson accepted the commission’s invitation.

Mr. Tavares-Finson had indicated his intention to accept the invitation at this morning’s sitting of the Senate.

He said he believes the session will offer a valuable opportunity for members to engage directly with the Integrity Commission, gain a clearer understanding of the statutory declaration process, and build confidence in fulfilling their obligations.
