Security Minister to meet with INDECOM to discuss concerns regarding use of body cameras
National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang says he will be meeting with the leadership of the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) to discuss concerns regarding the use of body cameras by police officers.
His statement comes in response to INDECOM noting that the majority of police officers involved in fatal shooting incidents were not wearing cameras.
To date, 152 people have been fatally shot by the security forces.
Speaking at yesterday’s post-cabinet press briefing Dr. Chang said while many officers wear body cameras, they’re mostly beneficial in public order incidents.
Dr. Chang said in cases of fatal shootings, body cameras hold very little value.
He noted that the constabulary’s priority has been to first outfit officers attached to the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) with cameras.
The Minister added that INDECOM’s comments have however been noted and will be addressed.
