A second laparoscopic surgery was successfully conducted at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) in St. Thomas yesterday.

The South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) says the procedure was facilitated by the recent acquisition of a state-of-the-art laparoscopic unit and essential disposables.

Consultant General Surgeon at PMH, Dr. Shaun Smith explained that laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery, involves small incisions and specialized instruments to treat conditions in the abdomen or pelvis.

Meanwhile, Senior Medical Officer of the Princess Margaret Hospital, Dr. Dwight Whittle says laparoscopic surgery is considered the standard of care for many procedures due to its many advantages which include  faster recovery and shorter hospital stay.

He adds that this procedure will benefit the hospital as more procedures can be done.
