Schools resume normal operations today as teachers return to work
Classes are expected to resume at several schools today (May 29) following disruption due to industrial action by teachers last week.
Teachers have been instructed to return to work following a meeting with representatives from the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) and the Education and Labour Ministries on Friday.
Last week, teachers in several parishes stayed off the job for two consecutive days to highlight their dissatisfaction with how they are being treated, and how the Government is handling concerns about salaries due to the public sector compensation restructuring.
The industrial action was set to continue this week. However, Friday’s meeting was reportedly fruitful and the teachers have agreed to return to work.
Labour Minister Pearnel Charles Jr said the situation is being monitored.
Meantime, the JTA is to meet with the Finance Ministry to address salary-related issues tomorrow.
