SBAJ says massive increases in light bills have created a financial disaster for the sector
The Small Business Association of Jamaica (SBAJ) says the massive increases in electricity bills have created a financial disaster for the small business sector.
The hiked light bills came to the fore at the weekend and spurred several calls for the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) to be investigated.
According to several customers, their August bills have doubled when compared to previous months, despite long periods of disruption following Hurricane Beryl.
Joining the public outcry, SBAJ President, Garnett Reid said despite having a $50 million USD Electricity Disaster Fund at its disposal, the JPS appears to be transferring post-Beryl recovery costs to customers.
He said several small businesses are now left to pay the high bills .
Mr. Reid also called for arrangements to be made for Jamaicans to have access to another power supplier, while decrying the service offered by the light and power company.
