Roje Stona and Shanieka Ricketts head list of nominees for National Sportsman & Sportwoman awards
Paris Olympics discus gold medal winner Roje Stona and Olympic triple jump silver medalist Shaneika Ricketts head the list of nominees announced on Wednesday for the 2024 National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Award.
Stona, who established a new Olympic record with his effort of 70.00 metres in the final, is joined by fellow podium finishers from the Paris Games.
These include 100m silver medalist Kishane Thompson, Wayne Pinnock the silver medal winner in the men’s long jump, along with Rasheed Broadbell the bronze medalist in the men’s 110m hurdles and Rajindra Campbell the third place finisher in the men’s shot put.
Completing the list are long jumper Carey McLeod who is ranked 5th in the world, national record holder Rusheen McDonald and Ackeem Blake who won bronze in the men’s 60m event at the World Indoor Championships.
The list of female nominees headed by Ricketts is also dominated by track and field athletes with Olympic 400m finalist Rushell Clayton, Nickisha Pryce the national 400m record holder, Ackera Nugent – who established a new national record in the 100m hurdles – all shortlisted alongside cyclist Lori Sharpe.
The nominees for People’s Choice Performance of the Year Award includes Rasheed Broadbell, Roje Stona, Kishane Thompson along with Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and Chavany Willis.
The winners will be unveiled on January 19, 2025 at the awards ceremony held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.
