Road death toll at 47; Road Safety Council says crashes remain a serious problem
The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) says this morning’s crash, which claimed the lives of three young people shows that road crashes remain a serious problem in Jamaica.
33-year-old Andre Wright, 26-year-old Tavaughn Miller and 19-year-old Dante Francis, all from Kingston, were killed in a crash along Marescaux Road in the parish.
Four other occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital for treatment.
Police say, at about 1:45 AM a Nissan motor car with seven people onboard was being driven along the roadway.
The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an embankment causing the motor car to burst into flames.
All seven occupants were taken to hospital, where Wright, Miller and Francis were pronounced dead.
Their deaths push the death toll since January 1 to 47.
Reacting to the incident, Vice Chairman of the Road Safety Council, Dr. Lucien Jones lamented that while Jamaica is doing better than last year’s comparative period when 49 road deaths were recorded, the reality is that road safety remains a critical national issue.
