Residents of Elderslie, St. Elizabeth and surrounding communities in St. James are better able to communicate with the rest of the country.

This after a system was set up in Elderslie, providing internet service and allowing people to charge their mobile devices.

Prior to this, residents had to walk some distance to the top of a hill to get phone signal.

They told IRIE FM News that persons aboard a helicopter delivered the system.

Residents reported that homes were destroyed and many houses lost their zinc roofs during the category 5 hurricane, which blocked the main routes to the community.

Trees have been stripped bare and roads are in a bad state.

One resident told IRIE FM News that there are a number of injured persons in the community, but she said residents have been helping each other.

Another resident lamented that they have not seen any political representative nearly a week after the hurricane.

The community is located in North West St. Elizabeth.

The resident who is based at the shelter at Elderslie Primary school, pointed out that the school was damaged and with daily rain, they are getting wet.

18 adults and 9 children are at the shelter.

Another resident, noting the effect of Melissa on the community expressed gratitude that she is in good health.
