Reggae Girlz Goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer joins Chelsea on emergency loan
Reggae Girlz goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer has joined defending Women’s Super League (WSL) champions Chelsea on an emergency loan from Tottenham Hotspur.
The loan, which will last until the end of the current WSL season, comes as a result of a long-term injury to Dutch Under-20 goalkeeper Femke Liefting and the news of regular number one goalkeeper Zecira Musovic’s pregnancy.
The loan move is in accordance with league rules and provides Chelsea with a seasoned and reliable goalkeeper to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season. Spencer, who has a wealth of experience at both the domestic and international levels, previously played for Chelsea between 2016 and 2018. During her time at the Blues, she enjoyed a trophy-laden career, winning a Women’s Super League title and an FA Cup.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper has also had a distinguished career with other top clubs, including Arsenal, where she was part of the squad that won the UEFA Women’s Champions League in the 2006/2007 season. She has also played for Nottingham Forest, Gillingham, Soyaux, Birmingham City, and Spurs, where she has been a key figure since 2019.
On the international stage, Spencer made her debut for the Reggae Girlz in 2021 and represented Jamaica at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Her standout performances helped the team make history by advancing to the Round of 16, marking a significant achievement for Jamaican women’s football.
Spencer will get her first taste of action when Chelsea, who hold a seven-point lead atop the table, play away to 5th placed Brighton on Sunday (March 2, 2025).
