Reggae Girlz defender Siobhan Wilson announces retirement from international football

Reggae Girlz defender Siobhan Wilson has made the emotional decision to retire from international football at the age of 30. The decision marks the end of a short but impactful international career, one that began just three years ago.

Wilson, having failed to make the final squad to the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup in France, joined the national team in 2022 and made her international debut in a 1-0 defeat against South Korea on September 3 of that year at the Hwaseong Sports Complex in Gyeonggi.

The versatile left-sided player scored her first goal for Jamaica in a dominant 3-0 win over South Africa on November 29, 2024 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex and went on to win 3 international caps.

Currently on loan with Southampton in the Women’s Super League (WSL) in England, Wilson’s retirement comes as a personal decision, shared with fans via a heartfelt message on social media. In her statement, Wilson reflected on the emotional journey of her career and expressed gratitude for the opportunities football has provided her.

“This has honestly been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make… but I’ve decided to retire from professional football,” Wilson wrote. “It’s not something I’ve taken lightly at all, and was definitely not a decision that was made overnight. This is a deeply personal decision, but I feel like now is the right time to step away, and focus on my business and other opportunities.”

Wilson’s love for the game and her national team was evident as she continued, “Football has given me so much – it’s taken me around the world, allowed me to play at the international level for Jamaica, and connected me to teammates who I can now call family. The game will always hold a special place in my heart, and while I’m stepping away from the pitch, I’ll always be a fan of the sport that gave me so much.”

Her message concluded with a heartfelt thank you to her supporters, adding, “I’m incredibly grateful for every moment, every club, every fan, and everyone who’s supported me along the way. Football will always be a part of me – but I’m excited for the future and to see what this next chapter holds.”

Wilson’s retirement comes just a few months after fellow Reggae Girl Marlo Sweatman also announced her decision to step away from professional football in March of 2025, making Wilson the second Reggae Girl to retire in the same year.

Among those sending tributes on social media was Reggae Girlz captain Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw who said “Enjoy retirement and good luck on your next path 👏🏾🙌🏾.” Tiffany Cameron added “Wishing you all the best. 🫂 God bless! 🙏🏾,” while Yazmeen Jamieson simply said “Excited for your next chapter.”

The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) responded to Wilson’s announcement with deep appreciation for her contributions to both the national team and the sport as a whole. “The Jamaica Football Federation extends our heartfelt gratitude to Siobhan for her incredible contribution to the game and the national team. Your passion, dedication, and leadership on and off the pitch have left an indelible mark on Jamaican football. As you step into this exciting new chapter, we wish you continued success in all your future endeavors. Once a Reggae Girl, always a Reggae Girl.”
