Reggae Boyz open World Cup campaign with win over Dominican Republic
Jamaica’s campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is up and running on a positive note.
The Reggae Boyz, despite the absence of eight first team regulars, carved out a 1-0 win against the visiting Dominican Republic in a game brought forward by over three hours at the National Stadium.
The lone goal of the contest was scored by Shamar Nicholson after 17 minutes and saw the home team go into the halftime break with the advantage.
In the second half, the Reggae Boyz came closest to increasing their lead in the 70th minute, but saw a penalty by Bobby Reid striking the upright.
The Jamaicans with the result moved to second in Group E on goal difference behind Guatemala who ran out 6-0 winners over Dominica on Wednesday.
Captain Damion Lowe, who was replaced at half time with a knock, said he was satisfied to have collected all three points.
The Heimir Hallgrimsson coached team heads off on Friday via chartered flight for Sunday’s match against Dominica.
