Privy Council quashes murder convictions of Vybz Kartel and co-accused on the ground of juror misconduct
The murder convictions of dancehall entertainer Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer, Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St. John have been quashed by the United Kingdom Privy Council on the ground of juror misconduct.
The council has also ordered that the case be sent back to the court of appeal in Jamaica, to decide if there should be a retrial of the appellants for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.
The ruling was handed down Thursday morning by Law Lord Lloyd-Jones – one of the four appeal judges who heard the appeal lodged by the 4 men, last month.
The ruling was made on the basis that the judge in the case took no action regarding the jury, after an alleged bribery attempt.
The Privy Council also said the judge took no account of the impact that the alleged bribery had on the remaining jurors.
Kartel, Campbell, Jones and St. John were convicted of the murder of Williams on March 13, 2014, ten years ago.
Meanwhile, Bert Samuels, a member of the legal team representing the men explained further, the Privy Council ruling.
He said based on the quashing of the conviction, by the council, Kartel and his co-accused can apply for bail.
