Police urge supporters of political parties in Westmoreland to refrain from violence

As political parties intensify their campaigning ahead of the next general elections, supporters in Westmoreland are being urged to refrain from violence.

The appeal was made by Head of Operations for the parish, Deputy Superintendent Kevin Francis, during yesterday’s meeting of the Municipal Corporation.

DSP Francis called on party representatives and their supporters to demonstrate respect for each other and the political process.

He noted that officers will not relent in their efforts to ensure peace and safety for all citizens.

DSP Francis’ call for peace during the campaigning period, follows a similar appeal by the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) yesterday.

Acting in its role as the political ombudsman, the ECJ reminded all political parties and their supporters that each Jamaican has the right to participate in the political process without fear or intimidation.

It said this includes the right to display and promote their political choice without interference.

Political leaders were especially encouraged to set the tone of unity, tolerance, and restraint.
