Police seized a submachine gun from a 7-year-old student at a school in St. Elizabeth today.

Police say the weapon was seized at about 11 AM.

Head of the Division, Superintendent Coleridge Minto confirmed the incident this afternoon.

The Education Ministry has opted not to comment on the matter, noting that it has been turned over to the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

A probe is reportedly underway to determine how the gun came to be in the child’s possession.
