The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) says this morning’s fatal shooting of four men at the Retirement Dump in St. James occurred during an intelligence-driven operation in response to acts of violence in the wider community.

Investigators have been probing a series of violent incidents linked to an ongoing conflict among individuals operating within the scrap metal trade at the Retirement Dump.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) which is probing the matter has identified three of the victims.

They are 55-year-old Bryan Fairclough, 27-year-old Brian Fairclough and 26-year-old Jahmar Ashman.

According to the JCF the incident occurred at approximately 5:40 a.m.

During the operation, it’s reported that members of the security forces came under attack and a confrontation ensued and the four men were shot.

They were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The JCF informed that the operation stemmed from ongoing investigations into recent acts of violence in the area including the murder of a man at the Retirement Dump on Friday, June 5.

Additionally the JCF stated that intelligence gathered by the police indicated that longstanding disputes among persons involved in the collection and sale of scrap metal as well as other recyclable materials had escalated in recent weeks.

This resulted in a cycle of violent reprisals and heightened tensions within the community.

The JCF said today’s operation formed part of the police’s response to intelligence suggesting a heightened risk of further violence and retaliation.

Law enforcement personnel were deployed to the area as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal activity, prevent additional loss of life and restore public safety.

Meanwhile the JCF said no further information will be released at this time while investigations remain active.
