Police officers urged to always treat citizens with respect, despite circumstances under which they interact

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has urged police officers to always treat citizens with respect, despite the circumstances under which they interact.

He expressed concern about reports of poor engagement between cops and relatives of a social media influencer who died in a recent incident involving officers.

Last month, two young men were travelling on a motorcycle along Woodpecker Avenue in Kingston when the bike collided with a JCF service vehicle, resulting in the youngsters sustaining serious injuries.

One of the young men was 21-year-old Jaheim Morrison, also known as ‘Kemar YG’ or ‘Handsome Bowy’, of Guava Road, Kingston.

He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Prime Minister Holness visited Morrison’s grieving relatives at the nine-night last week and assured them that, with the matter being probed by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), he is confident the family will get the answers and justice they seek.

Yesterday, while addressing the JCF graduation ceremony for the second cohort of inspectors, Mr. Holness shared how the interaction between cops and Morrison’s family left them feeling dehumanized.

The Prime Minister noted however, that an inspector treated the family with respect.

Mr. Holness urged the graduating inspectors to take note of the incident and like the officer who engaged Morrison’s family, be respectful when dealing with citizens.
