Police Emergency Communication Centre reports that 65% of calls made to 119 emergency line are prank calls

The Police Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) is reporting that 65% of calls made to the 119 emergency line are prank calls.

This has led the agency to place a strong emphasis on patience and tolerance in the training of its officers.

Head of the PECC, Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary Francis made the disclosure during yesterday’s episode of the Force4Good Podcast which focused on the evolution and power of the PECC – the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s central emergency communications hub.

ACP Francis said only about 20% of the calls received daily through the emergency system are emergency related.

He explained that the figures highlight the importance of continuous training for call handlers, who must remain professional and composed despite dealing with a high volume of prank calls.

ACP Francis is urging citizens to use the 119 emergency line more responsibly
