Police Commissioner Dr. Kevin Blake urges Jamaicans to help reduce violent confrontations with lawmen

Police Commissioner Dr. Kevin Blake is calling on Jamaicans to play their part in reducing violent confrontations with lawmen.

The call comes as he reiterates the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s commitment to de-escalation in its engagements with the public.

One hundred and sixteen citizens have been fatally shot by members of the security forces since the start of the year.

The Commissioner, in expressing concern about the recent fatal shooting incidents, describes them as unfortunate.

Dr. Blake stresses that the primary objective of the police in such situations is always to reduce tension and avoid escalation.

In the meantime he is issuing a broader appeal to citizens, urging collective responsibility in preventing violent outcomes.

He calls on all well-thinking Jamaicans to join in imploring violent and hardened criminals who the police pursue daily not to meet lawmen with deadly force.

The Commissioner again stresses that fatal outcomes are not the goal of police operations.

He also underscores the importance of discipline within the force, noting that officers are expected to act within established guidelines at all times.

The Commissioner also says the force continues to emphasise de-escalation, professionalism and adherence to the rule of law as key components of its strategy to reduce violent crime and protect lives.
