Police charge woman seen in confrontation with police officers

A woman captured on a viral video engaged in a physical confrontation with police officers has been charged with assault and resisting arrest.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) confirmed the charges in a statement clarifying the incident’s details.

The JCF explained that a team from the Spanish Town station responded to a call from a primary school administrator on Monday requesting assistance to remove a disruptive parent from the school compound.

It said despite multiple attempts by the police to engage the woman peacefully, the situation escalated, resulting in her being arrested and charged.

Noting that yesterday’s incident is one of several which have occurred recently, the JCF urged members of the public to cooperate with the police during interactions, especially an arrest.

It explained that the constabulary force act, gives officers authority to arrest individuals without a warrant if they are found committing an offence or if there are reasonable grounds to suspect that an individual has committed or is about to commit an offence.

The JCF added that if citizens feel their rights are being violated, they should comply first and address the issue through the appropriate legal channels later.
