PNP Womens Movement welcomes steps taken by party leadership following incest charges on former MP
The People’s National Party Women’s Movement says the long-awaited revision of the sexual offences act must be completed, with focus placed on the definition of incest to ensure that it captures all incidents and protects all children.
The movement made the statement as it welcomed steps taken by the PNP’s leadership to review the membership of a former member of parliament who has been charged with incest.
The PNPWM said the charge is profoundly serious.
It noted that it took courage for the family and the child to report the very serious allegation.
The movement said in this regard, their privacy must be respected as they work through this exceedingly difficult period.
The PNP WM also expressed hope-that the matter will be resolved in the shortest possible time and that justice will prevail.
The movement also cited a 2023 UNICCEF survey which indicates that 23.7% of girls and 11.7% of boys experience sexual violence, with approximately 25% of the perpetrators being family members.
The PNPWM stressed that the revision of the legislation must be completed.
