PNP condemns “inflammatory”, “reckless” comments by PM; says PNP protest today will be peaceful, principled and within bounds of law
The People’s National Party (PNP) has strongly condemned what it calls, inflammatory and reckless statements by Prime Minister, Dr. Andrew Holness at a political rally in St. James last night.
In a statement, the PNP claimed, Dr. Holness incited Jamaica Labour Party supporters to confront peaceful PNP demonstrators over the appointment of Dennis Chung as the Chief Technical Director of the Financial Investigations Division.
It explained that in response to the PNP’s lawful and peaceful protest against corruption and political interference, the Prime Minister labelled the demonstrators as agents of “badmindism” and referred to a “different Labourite”, which is no longer afraid.
The PNP said such language, especially coming from the head of government, is deeply irresponsible and dangerous.
The PNP argued that it was not a call for civil engagement but a call to confrontation.
The PNP said in a country where political tensions have too often turned deadly, this rhetoric recklessly endangers the safety of ordinary Jamaicans and undermines the very foundations of Jamaica’s democracy.
The PNP maintains that its protest today will be peaceful, principled and within the bounds of the law.
It said it will not be deterred by threats, nor distracted from its mission to hold the Government accountable for its actions.
