PNP asks Police Commissioner to address reports of vote buying and intimidation, JLP refutes claims
The People’s National Party,(PNP), has asked Police Commissioner, Dr. Kevin Blake, to ensure that breaches relating to vote buying and intimidation are identified and addressed.
In a letter to the commissioner, which was shared with the public, PNP General Secretary, Dr. Dayton Campbell raised the issues.
He urged the police high command to ensure that the constabulary operates with fairness and professionalism in addressing the concerns, during the campaign period and today’s by-election exercise.
Dr Campbell said the PNP received a report of thugs tearing down orange flags and firing shots, in Lyssons, St Thomas, yesterday.
He said the party has also been alerted to plans by certain individuals to engage in vote-buying activities in Aenon Town, Clarendon and Morant Bay, St Thomas.
The PNP is only contesting the by- elections at the municipality level.
Dr Campbell said intimidation and vote buying serve to undermine the integrity of the nation’s electoral system.
Meantime, Chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Robert Montague has shot down claims that the party has been involved in vote-buying in the Aenon Town Division in Clarendon.
Mr. Montague was responding to queries from reporters at yesterday’s media conference.
The vote buying claims were made by the People’s National Party, (PNP), which also reported the matter to the police.
By-elections are being held in the divisions of Aenon Town, Clarendon and Morant Bay St Thomas today.
polling will also take place in 2 constituencies Trelawny Southern and St. Andrew North Western.
