PM says rural school bus system will be transformational

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness says the rural school bus system being rolled out in the new school year will be transformational.

The programme will commence with 50 buses under a joint effort between the education and transport ministries.

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC will handle maintenance.

Dr. Holness says the education ministry will fund the full subsidy for path students, and school rules will apply on the buses to ensure discipline and safety.

The Prime minister explains that students in rural Jamaica will see an economic benefit from the school bus system.

The buses will operate cash-less, and there will be school-appointed supervisors on board to maintain order.

With advanced tracking technology built into each bus, parents will be able to see in real time where the bus is, its speed, and how far it is from school, all through an easy-to-use app.
