PM Holness says work is far advanced on programme that will ensure all citizens have access to safe electricity
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has noted the government’s commitment to addressing energy poverty, and ensuring that all Jamaicans have access to electricity.
The pledge comes on the heels of recent fires caused by open flame lighting, some of which have resulted in the death of children.
The most recent incident happened yesterday in Walkerswood, St. Ann, which left 3 children dead.
Two-year-old Tavaughno, four-year-old Tashanie and seven-year-old Tashana Mattis perished in a blaze at their home some time around 2:00 A.M.
While it’s not yet clear what led to the fire, it was noted that the house had no electricity and was being lit by lamps.
In a statement last evening, Mr. Holness said the Energy Ministry is working on a programme for households facing energy insecurity.
