PM Holness says Opposition is hindering Jamaica’s transition to a republic to deny JLP being credited for the achievement

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has claimed that the Opposition is hindering Jamaica’s transition to a republic because it does not want the governing Jamaica Labour Party to go down in history for the achievement.

Earlier this year, the People’s National Party decided not to participate further in the Joint Select Committee examining Jamaica’s transition to a republic, until the government addresses key concerns with the process.

Opposition Leader Mark Golding, in defending the decision said he is seeking clarification on whether the government plans to abolish the Privy Council in favor of the Caribbean Court of Justice.

Speaking at a JLP meeting in St. Catherine on Sunday, Dr. Holness said at first the PNP supported the move to sever ties with Britain, however, that seems to have changed.
