PM Holness says Accompong maroons are a part of Jamaican sovereignty
Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has stressed that the Accompong maroons of St. Elizabeth are a part of the Jamaican sovereignty.
The issue of sovereignty has been a contentious one between the government and the maroons for some time, with claims and counter claims about who has authority over maroon lands and governance.
Yesterday, the Accompong maroons celebrated the treaty with the British that established the community, ensuring its freedom and autonomy.
Speaking at the event Dr. Holness pointed out that, as prime minister, he is obligated to the maroons, being their steward of resources.
Dr. Holness said his job is not to be an over lord, but to ensure that the different levels of government work.
He likened the maroon leadership to a community based cultural organisation.
