PM Holness assures that Govt is working on beach access and freshwater policies
Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has reassured stakeholders that his administration is working on the national swamp and freshwater policy and the beach access and management policy.
He was speaking yesterday at the national Labour Day project at the Mason River Environmental and Research Park in Clarendon.
Mason River has been designated a protected national heritage area under the natural resources conservation authority act and a protected national heritage site under the Jamaica national heritage trust act.
The Prime Minister’s comments were made in line with this year’s Labour Day theme, “Protect the environment: our land, our duty, our future” and the rallying call, “Jamaica nice, protect wi paradise”.
The comments also follow calls from local lobby groups, to include the Jamaica Beach Birth right Environmental Movement (JABBEM), for the government to rectify issues related to citizens being denied access to some beaches.
Dr. Holness said the beach access and management policy is almost complete.
As for the Mason River Park, several government officials, stakeholders and scores of other volunteers conducted improvement works at the facility, yesterday.
The Prime Minister noted that government has spent $8 m on improving the facility.
Dr. Holness said the government understands that preservation requires investment, not just intention.
