PIOJ projects Jamaica’s poverty rate will continue to decline if there is no external shock to the economy
Following news that Jamaica’s poverty rate declined significantly in 2023, the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) is projecting that the downward trend will hold in 2025.
Yesterday, the PIOJ released Jamaica’s 2023 poverty data, noting that it was estimated at 8.2 per cent, a decline from 16.7 per cent in 2021.
PIOJ’s Director General, Dr. Wayne Henry, said this reduction represents the lowest rate recorded since the poverty rate was first measured in 1989.
Responding to reporters about whether this reduction would continue in 2025, Dr. Henry said declines are expected if there is no shock to the economy.
He explained that potential shocks could stem from national disasters and international geopolitical tensions
He also noted that Jamaica could see continued declines if it continues to implement initiatives such as the Poor Relief Programme and the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH).
