Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Mikael Phillips has rejected what he describes as false and misleading claims by Deputy Leader of Government Business Robert Morgan about the incident at Gordon House following yesterday’s premature adjournment of Parliament.
Phillips has acknowledged that he reacted angrily during the incident and used an expletive, an action for which he says he is regretful.
In a statement this morning, Phillips said he was standing with two other Opposition MPs discussing the circumstances surrounding the adjournment, when the House Speaker left the Chamber.
He alleged that it was at that point that MP for Kingston Western, Desmond McKenzie, verbally confronted him and made an offensive remark about his deceased mother.
According to Phillips, McKenzie repeated the remark, prompting his angry response.
The Manchester North Western MP also argued that the frustration of members’ rights to speak and debate has contributed to an increasingly tense atmosphere in the House of Representatives and a deterioration in Parliamentary Order.
