Phil Simmons retained as Bangladesh head coach until 2027 ICC World Cup

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced that former West Indies all-rounder, Phil Simmons, will continue in his role as head coach until the 2027 ICC One-Day International (ODI) World Cup.

At 61 years old, Simmons brings a wealth of experience to the table, having made an indelible mark in both playing and coaching careers. His initial contract with the BCB was set to expire after the ICC Champions Trophy, but his tenure with the team between October 2024 and February 2025, during which Bangladesh won one Test and a T20I series in West Indies, has earned him an extension.

“I am delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Bangladesh cricket on a long-term basis,” Simmons said. “The talent within this team is undeniable, and I believe we have the potential to achieve great things together. I am looking forward to the journey ahead. Having worked with some exceptional players already, I can see the immense promise in this squad. Their skill and passion for the game inspire me daily. Together, we can take Bangladesh cricket to new heights and create something truly special.”

Simmons, who is one of four coaches to oversee 400 international matches, represented the West Indies in 26 Tests and 143 ODIs between 1987 and 1999, showcasing his skills as an all-rounder. Following his playing career, Simmons transitioned into coaching, beginning with Zimbabwe in 2004. He then moved on to coach Ireland from 2007 to 2015.

His most celebrated coaching achievement came during his two terms as head coach of the West Indies, notably in 2016 when the team clinched the ICC World T20 title.

The appointment puts to rest speculation on Simmons’ future with Bangladesh and he will not coach Karachi Kings anymore in the PSL. He was Karachi’s head coach since December 2023 and also had a stint with Afghanistan from 2018 to 2019.
