Over 700 truckloads of solid waste removed from Catherine Hall and West Green

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has removed over 700 truckloads of solid waste from Catherine Hall and West Green in Montego Bay, St. James.

The works in the flood-affected communities are aimed at  restoring public safety in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.

Minister with Responsibility for Works, Robert Nesta Morgan, Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley, and Executive Director of the NSWMA Audley Gordon were among officials who toured the areas today.

Mr. Morgan outlined that Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has assigned Dr. Wheatley to help return the communities to normalcy.

Noting that floodwaters rose as high as 10 feet, destroying furniture, clothing, roofing, and other household items Dr. Wheatley said the first priority is public health and safety.

The Cabinet has reportedly tasked the municipality and the NSWMA to engage significant labour and equipment from the areas to carry out clean-up activities.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gordon confirmed that a new phase of the operation will begin tonight.

The government is urging residents to exercise caution and cooperate with cleanup teams as restoration efforts progress.
