Over 6,000 polling stations to facilitate voting in Local Government Election
Some 6,726 polling stations will open at 7 a.m., to facilitate voting in the Local Government Election.
499 candidates are seeking to be elected as representatives for 228 divisions. Three of the candidates are in a contest for the Mayor of Portmore, who is directly elected.
Of the candidates 229 each are representing the Jamaica Labour Party, and the People’s National Party, four are representing the United Independents’ congress, while 37 are independent candidates.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica, EOJ says it is all set for the election today.
It is appealing to electors for patience at the polling stations, and reminding them that they have until 5:00 p.m. to vote.
The EOJ says the election will be observed by local observer group Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections, (Caffe), and a small delegation from the organization of American States and the British High Commission.
After voting ends, the preliminary counting of ballots will take place inside the polling stations.
