The Office of Utilities Regulations, OUR, has instructed the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) to reduce customers’ September bills in a manner which will remedy disproportionate increases imposed during this month’s billing cycle.

Energy Minister, Daryl Vaz gave the update today.

It follows concerns raised by many customers about a hike in their august bills.

In a statement today, Mr. Vaz said he was informed about the development in writing by Director General of the OUR, Ansord Hewitt.

Mr. Vaz had written to the OUR, insisting on redress for JPS customers.

In response, the OUR said JPS has been directed to reduce the fuel charge for the 2024 September bills by the difference in JPS’ fuel cost in July over June.

It said bills with zero consumption that do not show a corresponding zero money value should be re-issued.

The OUR has indicated that the directive is tantamount to a reversal of the current hefty increases.

JPS has also agreed not to pursue any disconnections due to bill payment up to September 15.

In welcoming the announcements, Mr. Vaz said he will be monitoring the process closely.

He said he awaits word from the OUR on its investigation into the current JPS billing cycle and has urged a comprehensive but expeditious completion of the probe.

Additionally, the ministry will continue discussions with stakeholders to ensure a special audit takes place of JPS’ billing processes.
