Opposition Senator Damion Crawford says Teaching Council Bill may impose financial strain on teachers

Opposition Senator Damion Crawford says the Jamaica Teaching Council Bill, which was passed in the Upper House on Friday, could have significant financial implications for teachers.

Speaking in the Senate on Friday, Mr. Crawford noted that the cost teachers may incur if a regulation is breached could further deepen their financial burdens.

He explained that the bill does not state whether the government will assist teachers in the event of a breach.

Senator Crawford noted that if the bill were less punitive and more supportive, a fund could be created to allow teachers to get proper legal representation.

He also raised concern about who should pay for professional development for teachers.
