A call is being made for more sign language interpreters to be present at Parliamentary proceedings to align with local and international standards.

Opposition Senator, Dr. Floyd Morris, raised the matter at today’s sitting of the Upper House after an interpreter was not present when the proceedings commenced.

According to Senator Dr. Morris, this was not the first time it had happened.

He stressed that at least two sign language interpreters should be assigned, with their duties rotated to prevent fatigue, translation errors or absences.

In response, Senate President Tom Tavares Finson said the issue was being dealt with by the House Clerk.

He also instructed that the Clerk liaise with Senator Morris about how the matter will be resolved.
