Opposition seeking legal advice to determine if Gov’t’s decision to increase retirement age for DPP/AG can be challenged in court

The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is seeking legal advice on whether or not the passing of legislation to raise the age of retirement for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and Auditor General (AG) from 60 to 65 years, can be challenged in court.

The bill to facilitate the change was approved in the Lower House yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference today (July 26) Opposition Leader Mark Golding reiterated that he was not consulted on the matter.

He suggested that the amendment was unconstitutional and legal advice is being sought on the matter.

Mr. Golding also noted that his party is concerned about why the extension of the DPP’s tenure was undertaken.
