Opposition says Parliament’s Joint Select Committee reviewing Domestic Violence Act has not met in over a year

Opposition Spokesperson on Justice Donna Scott Mottley says Parliament’s Joint Select Committee reviewing the Domestic Violence Act has not met in over a year.

She made the statement at the People’s National Party Divisional Conference in Christiana, Manchester, on Sunday, where she highlighted recent incidents of violence against women and girls.

These include the physical assault of a female nurse by a licensed firearm holder in an alleged road rage incident earlier this month.

Senator Scott Mottley criticised the governing Jamaica Labour Party, claiming that its women have not done enough to condemn these acts.

She also claimed that the Joint Select Committee reviewing the critical piece of legislation in an effort to strengthen the protection of Jamaica’s women has not met since March last year.

In February, human rights lobby group Jamaicans for Justice called for an update on the Committee.

It said the lack of action is deeply concerning, particularly in light of repeated commitments by Prime Minister, Dr. Andrew Holness to address the issue of domestic violence.
