Opposition says government needs to place more emphasis on affordable housing

The opposition People’s National Party, (PNP) says government needs to place more emphasis on providing affordable housing for Jamaicans.

This, even as leader Mark Golding welcomed some of the changes announced to the National Housing Trust, (NHT) programmes by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Last Thursday, the prime minister indicated that NHT beneficiaries will have access to home improvement loans after 10 years, among other things.

Responding to questions regarding the announcements, Mr. Golding said the changes are welcomed, but the government also needs to work on delivering more affordable housing options.

Opposition spokesman on finance, Julian Robinson echoed similar sentiments as he noted that the fundamental issue with housing has not been addressed, adequately.

He argued that the issue with housing in Jamaica is affordability.

Mr. Robinson said government must aim for houses with a price point below $15 million.

Both men were speaking to journalists following a PNP National Executive Council meeting in May Pen, Clarendon on Sunday.
