Opposition rejects misogyny in comments on Holness, Dalrymple Philibert as House Speaker
The opposition People’s National Party has rejected claims that its comments about the re-appointment of either Juliet Holness or Marissa Dalrymple Philibert as House Speaker were misogynistic.
On Wednesday, the PNP noted that it had no confidence in Mrs. Holness and Mrs. Dalrymple Philibert, who previously served as Speakers of the House of Representatives and that it would not support their reappointment.
The PNP said the Speakers’ handling of certain issues, including reports to Parliament from the Auditor General and the Integrity Commission has eroded trust and confidence.
Yesterday, the JLP said the PNP’s refusal to support the appointment of the women strongly hints at misogyny and arrogance and comes at a time when, as a society, the country should be supporting capable women in leadership.
Mrs. Holness was later named House Speaker during the opening of Parliament.
Speaking to IRIE News this morning, PNP Chairperson Dr. Angela Brown Burke said the JLP’s claim of misogyny is an attempt to weaponize criticisms.
She said the PNP has been a champion of supporting women, noting that for the first time in the party’s history, more than 30% of candidates for the 2025 general election were females.
She claimed that the JLP is attempting to silence the opposition when it is making a point of principle.
