Opposition Leader wants gov’t to increase social spending to $40B to aid vulnerable
Opposition Leader Mark Golding has renewed his call for the government to increase social spending to aid vulnerable and low income groups in the country.
Speaking at the People’s National Party, PNP Women’s Movement 48th Annual Conference, yesterday (July 10), the party leader said the recent social spending announcement by the government is minimal compared to the current needs of the population.
Last week, Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke outlined a raft of financial support programmes, amounting to an additional 2.7 billion dollars for many in the vulnerable population.
The announcement brought total support to 3.8 billion dollars.
However, Mr. Golding while noting that the idea was that of the PNP said the amount is small and that the government needs to set aside some 40 billion dollars to aid the situation.
He urged Jamaicans not to be fooled by the government’s actions.
